AR, VR and MR.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will \u201center the metaverse\u201d by wearing a headset that either combines the physical and digital worlds, or fully immerses you in a digital world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital objects atop what you\u2019re seeing in the real world, using your phone\u2019s camera and screen, or AR glasses such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nreal.ai\/light\/\">Nreal Light<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lenovo.com\/us\/en\/thinkrealitya3\/\">Lenovo\u2019s ThinkReality&nbsp;A3<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virtual Reality (VR) fully blocks out the real world and shows you digital worlds by donning goggles or headsets that immerse your eyes and ears directly within an alternate reality.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mixed Reality (MR) includes both AR and VR; MR headsets may combine augmented and virtual reality features.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.&nbsp;Immersion and Presence. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you use the internet today, you know you\u2019re looking at a screen. By contrast, the metaverse will immerse you inside a 3D world and make you feel \u201cpresent\u201d there. VR headset screens sit right in front of your eyes, making everything look up close and real, even as you move your head and look down at your hands. In VR, the metaverse will \u201cfeel\u201d different from seeing the same things on a 2D screen.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Avatars and Digital Twins.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1281538259-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1281538259-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1281538259-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1281538259-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1281538259-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1281538259-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone knows video game characters such as Super Mario and Princess Peach, but in the metaverse,&nbsp;you&nbsp;can be the character \u2013 either your 3D \u201cdigital twin,\u201d or an alternate version called an avatar, customized to your preference. Wish you were a little bit taller? Your metaverse avatar will be able to see and experience the world differently from your human body.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Metaverse Spaces.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1399581170-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1399581170-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1399581170-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1399581170-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1399581170-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1399581170-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people expect the metaverse to be one continuous space connecting every game and virtual experience, as seen in&nbsp;<em>Ready Player One<\/em>. But some metaverse developers are trying to lower the bar, at least to start. Meta now suggests that there won\u2019t be one metaverse; instead, expect \u201cmetaverse spaces\u201d that may or may not work together. Microsoft\u2019s Satya Nadella agrees, and Sony\u2019s latest metaverse plans separate \u201csocial\u201d from \u201clive network\u201d spaces. If true, the metaverse may well resemble today\u2019s fractured internet.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Interoperability.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pivot from \u201cone metaverse\u201d to \u201cmetaverse spaces\u201d comes from uncertainty about sharing assets between different companies\u2019 metaverse offerings. For instance, no one knows whether your avatar, clothes, and currency from Sony\u2019s metaverse will work in Niantic\u2019s or Meta\u2019s. Interoperability is the solution, but will require developers to follow common standards, rather than invent their own. In June 2022, 37 companies \u2013\u202fincluding many major AR\/VR\/MR hardware, software, and web standard players \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/metaverse-standards.org\/news\/press-releases\/leading-standards-organizations-and-companies-unite-to-drive-open-metaverse-interoperability\/\">announced the founding of the Metaverse Standards Forum<\/a>&nbsp;to drive open interoperability.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. The Creator Economy. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entire metaverse worlds, experiences, and assets are yet to be built, and creators \u2013 people with the skills to create realistic 3D objects, animations, and interactive experiences \u2013\u202fwill be key to populating them. For example, people will need to make all of the metaverse\u2019s cars, hot air balloons, airplanes, and spaceships, and over time, creating or customizing metaverse content will be probably as easy as making TikTok videos today. Meta is already offering revenue-sharing deals to spur development of digital assets, targeting the current Creator Economy\u2019s estimated 50 million people.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>7.&nbsp;Blockchain, Crypto (currencies) and NFTs (oh my).&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s internet is a global web of connected computers that share data, enabling information to literally spread anywhere in seconds.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Blockchain uses that web for encrypted but publicly visible transfers of digital currency \u2013\u202fknown as cryptocurrencies or \u201ccrypto\u201d \u2013\u202fthat mimic government-backed currencies by being ownable or transferable by individuals and fluctuating in value.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are digital assets, including art, that use blockchain to guarantee individual ownership, transferability, and uniqueness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Metaverse-to-Metaverse, Metaverse-to-Real World, and Real World-to-Metaverse Commerce.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1397542920-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1397542920-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1397542920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1397542920-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1397542920-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1397542920-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Using conventional and digital currencies, people will make transactions inside and outside the metaverse: purchases made inside the metaverse for metaverse goods or services, inside the metaverse for real world goods or services, and in the real world for metaverse goods or services. In other words, you\u2019ll use the metaverse to order pizza or clothing for your real home, just like smartphone apps today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>9. Metaverse Moments.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"626\" height=\"626\" src=\"https:\/\/allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/626x0w.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/626x0w.webp 626w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/626x0w-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.allisonworldwide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/626x0w-150x150.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/nfts\/id1586989316?i=1000540608278\">Cathy Hackl uses this term<\/a>&nbsp;to describe real but fleeting previews of the metaverse as its structure and experiences continue to be built out. One example: Lil Nas X\u2019s pandemic era virtual concert inside the game Roblox. If Roblox is a metaverse platform, this event \u2013 a professional musician entertaining real people in a virtual space \u2013 is an actual, widely documented moment in time that many people experienced in the metaverse, even if there\u2019s no conventional physical evidence that it happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>10. Ephemerality. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Controversially, Meta suggests that speech in the metaverse \u2013\u202flike spoken words \u2013 will be temporary and not publicly recorded, so it shouldn\u2019t be regulated like written communications. But given the likelihood of virtual harassment and other harms, users and governments may demand heavier moderation of metaverse interactions than today\u2019s social media platforms, likely leveraging new moderation techniques such as AI. This will be a hot topic as adoption increases, and definitely an area to watch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of other important metaverse concepts to discuss, and more to say on the ones above.
